Don't fall for this email scam!

Reposted from socalbubble.com:

Dear American:

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.

This is a matter of great urgency. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.

Yours Faithfully Minister of Treasury Paulson

Bailouts

Reposted from Barry Ritholtz's The Big Picture, via LA Land:

Lehman Brothers was like the little kid pulling the tail of a dog. You know the kid is going to get hurt eventually, and so no one is surprised when the dog turns around and bites the kid. But the kid only hurts himself, so no one really cares that much.

• Bear Stearns is the little pyro -- the kid who was always playing with matches. He could harm not only himself, but burns his own house down, and indeed, he could have burnt down the entire neighborhood. The Fed stepped in not to protect him, but the rest of the block.

• AIG is the kid who accidentally stumbled into a bio-tech warfare lab . . . finds all these unlabeled vials, and heads out to the playground with a handful of them jammed into his pockets.

Fame

Reposted from Snoopy's Typewriter:
--------------------------------------------------

Some have their fifteen minutes of fame. (a la Lisa on Top Chef...NOT that I watch.)

For others, let's generously call it two seconds. And out of focus.

Tonight, I made the Katie Couric show. Sort of. Well, okay, lurking in the background, pretending to be busy. Okay, if I had even noticed the camera, I probably would have pretended, but it's actually been a really busy week for me. By the way, I'm the one in the blue shirt. (Jenny didn't notice either.)

Freedom

Reposted from Snoopy's Typewriter:
--------------------------------------------------

What could possibly bring tears to my eyes? I have seen a man fly.

It is with such a mixture of envy and admiration that I post this article and video of Yves Rossy, the Swiss pilot who flew with rocket-powered wings strapped to his back.

It is one of my deepest wishes that when I get to heaven, God will give me wings.

The Cost of Energy

From the blog of Bill Gross:

  • $0.05 per kw/hr — the cost of electricity generated from coal (the dirtiest fossil fuel)
  • $0.10 per kw/hr — the cost of electricity generated from gas (more expensive, but quite a bit better than coal)
  • $0.16 per kw/hr — the cost of electricity generated from solar thermal (many people are working to beat this now)
  • $0.24 per kw/hr — the cost of electricity generated from photovoltaic panels on large scale solar farms (many people are working to beat this too)
  • $0.40 per kw/hr — the cost of electricity generated from photovoltaic panels on rooftops of homes and businesses
